The Podjavorinské Museum

The Podjavorinské MuseumThe Podjavorinské Museum in Nové Mesto nad Váhom (New Town-on-Váh) resides at a formerly Renaissance building, rebuilt in Baroque style in 17th century, which is called the Giláni´s House or the "Gilánovec" (named by one of the owners). The Museum originated in 1950. Since seventies of 20th century it has been a specialized branch of Trenčín Museum with a historical and homeland-scientific research, but first of all it´s specialized in the research of literature´s history. In the rooms of the Museum, there is installed an exposition devoted to the history of Nové Mesto (New Town) and surroundings; its culture and traditions. It is divided into particular parts dedicated to archeology, history, ethnography and the history of craft guilds in Nové Mesto and surroundings. A separate part makes visitors acquainted with a rich spiritual history of this region.

A rich folk culture of Nové Mesto region is reminded of by the Peasant Room. The decor and ceramics morphology come out of Hutterite traditions and they form a separate creative regional phenomenon. Till the half of the 20th century the popular decoration of a folk interior was created by glass-paintings with sacral thematics.

To the rarest examples of Gothic so-called Beautiful Madonnas belongs a "Koryčanská" (Beckovská) Madonna. In the 14th century she was placed inside the Beckov castle´s chapel, till Ctibor II of Ctiborice had displaced her into a renovated church in Nové Mesto nad Váhom. During the raids of Hussites she was, however, taken back to Beckov. In the times of reformation Madonna was transferred to Koryčany, at where she has been situated till today. At the Museum of Nové Mesto can be seen her authentical copy.
