Rotunda

RotundaDuring 1972-1975 had been discovered the bases of Pre-romanesque Rotunda near Barbora´s Palace, Matúš´s Tower and the Fifth Gate. This discovery has not only shifted dating of the Castle´s inceptions back, but has as well become one of the oldest sacral properties at our territory.

A unique quarterfoil ("four-absided") ground plan distinguishes this Rotunda from all those other ones till now discovered central buildings in Slovakia. With the sepulchral finds the Rotunda is dated to the end of 11th century, but there exists a possibility that this may be a kind of Great Moravian architecture. Almost identical ground plan can be seen in Mikulčice (today´s Moravia) where a Great Moravian "horizon" is indisputable.
